You might get nervous just thinking about stepping in front of the camera and having to pose. I know the word posing sounds already awkward but to be honest even the most natural and genuine laughing shots need some guidance from the photographer. Setting the client in good natural light and a flattering pose is a vital part of a personal brand photo shoot. Here are some tips and posing ideas for your personal brand shoot.

For all of the following examples below always remember:

  • Sit and stand up straight, it automatically gives you an instant lift and a confident posture.
  • Instead of having your feet next to each other, position one in front of the other which again will give your legs a bit more length.
  • A great tip is to tilt your hips away from the camera and instead bring your upper body and face a bit closer to the camera. This helps to slim your waistline and brings the center of attention to your face.
  • We feel the most awkward when our hands have nothing to do. Use your props, hold a book, pen or use your pockets if you’re lucky to have any. If you don’t you can hold with one hand the tip of of the thumb of your other hand.
  • And one very important tip when you are worried about a double chin; move your shoulders back and your chin forward. This little movement gives you more space between neck and chin.
Now you should be ready to try some of the ideas below. Have fun!

Pose #1 – At Work

The easiest way to forget you’re being photographed is doing what you do best. Show your work space, home office, the tools you use and the products you sell. Invite your audience to your daily work routine. I love seeing behind the scenes images of brands. Your photographer will set you in the best position and you just carry on with an unfinished product. One of my clients worked on an illustration for her client which was brilliant as it took her mind of the shoot. This is always a great and easy start for your personal brand photo session.

Pose #2 – Get Moving

I love this part a lot as movement brings joy and personality to your photos. This can be as dynamic as you want for example a happy jump, a twirl or just a slow walk. This obviously depends on your business, values and the goal of your brand photo shoot. The movement in your images creates strong emotions and gives your brand photographs a natural look which will get more engagement from your audience.

Pose #3 – Close Up

This one is very easy as it doesn’t really involve big poses. The close up shots can be done during all the other set ups while you are doing your thing. They can be images of you using your tools, of your hands typing on your computer, holding your phone using a social media platform or just holding your favourite book or a cup of tea. These images are great to use in between the  portrait shots to keep your social media profile light and digestible. They can be used to bring attention to the products or services you offer or as filler images leading to a more important image.

Pose #4 – The Headshot/ Portrait

We all need them: The headshot, looking straight into the camera and making eye contact with your audience. These images find a great use in publications, magazine features, press release, introductions on your website or simply on LikedIn. I like to get some portraits during all the other poses as it gives my clients different options of locations and outfits. To add to the variety of the headshots I tell my clients to look in different directions.

Pose #5 – Lifestyle

These is another of my favourites as it shows your audience a bit more of your personality. You might want to share what you like to do with your family on weekends, what podcast your like listen to or how you spent your Sundays. Put on your best PJ’s, jump on the sofa or bed with some headphones or laptop. Hold your favourite coffee mug for extra coziness. I understand these ideas might be to intimate for some but I promise you they are great conversation starters.

I had two of my own personal brand shoots done now and I can assure you, you get a great variety of brand images by changing up your poses just slightly, move your hand a little bit, brush the hair out of your face, change your facial expressions, look around. Just move a little bit after you hear the shutter speed, make use of your props and experiment. I promise you it will be so much fun!
